- Foundation member leads a tour
LeConte-Woodmanston Foundation
The
LeConte-Woodmanston Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Its
mission is to preserve the rich historic, ecological and scientific heritage
of the LeConte-Woodmanston Plantation, and to provide a public educational
and interpretive program.
The preservation project began in the 1970’s through the foresight of a
few local citizens who recognized that unless action was taken, the site
would become just another timber tract. This group acquired 63.8 of
the original 3,300 acres. The acquisition was made possible by The Brunswick
Pulp and Paper Co. donating its lease and option equities in the tract while
the heirs of the estate of the late Mr. C.B. Jones conveyed ownership of the
land. The Liberty County Historical Society helped secure registration of
the site on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and a few years
later the LeConte-Woodmanston Foundation was established and given title to
the property.
Since then the foundation’s goal has been to create a site where people can
learn about the scientific contributions of the LeContes and the lives they
and those enslaved on the plantation lived while at the same time allowing
naturalists, gardeners and others with similar interests a place to work,
study and enjoy the quiet solitude.
Much can be said about the sincere devotion, great effort, and time expended
by past foundation members to accomplish this mission. It has truly been a
“labor of love” for many and the site would not be what it is today without
them.
Current members of the foundation and board of directors continue to endeavor to make
LeConte-Woodmanston the best it can be. Keep an eye on the
